Doha: Two-time Asian champions Qatar suffered a shocking 1-0 defeat to Palestine in their FIFA Arab Cup Group A opener at Al Bayt Stadium, as a last-minute own goal decided the contest. In front of 61,475 passionate spectators, Qatar dominated possession and created multiple chances, but their frustrations peaked when defender Sultan Al Brake inadvertently turned in a cross from Ahmad Alqaq in the fifth minute of stoppage time.
Qatar
pushed relentlessly throughout the match, with Akram Afif leading the hosts’
attacking efforts and Edmilson Junior adding spark after coming on at halftime.
Despite a series of attempts, including a powerful header from Mohammed Muntari
and long-range efforts from Lucas Mendes and Mohammad Al Mannai, Qatar were
denied by Palestine goalkeeper Rami Hamada, who delivered a composed
performance. A potential penalty for Qatar was overturned after VAR review,
adding to the hosts' mounting disappointment.
Palestine,
meanwhile, absorbed the pressure with resilience and grew in confidence late in
the game. Substitute Oday Dabbagh tested Qatar on the counter, and Palestine
intensified their pressing in the final minutes, earning the decisive corner
that led to the own goal. With this historic win, Palestine move level on
points with Syria—who earlier defeated Tunisia—and will face Tunisia next at
Lusail Stadium. Qatar, under coach Julen Lopetegui, will look to regroup
quickly before meeting Syria on Thursday at Khalifa International Stadium.
