Algerian Olympic champion Imane Khelif has appealed to the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) against a new rule by the global boxing federation requiring genetic testing for participation in upcoming events. Khelif, who won gold at the Paris 2024 Games, was at the centre of a gender eligibility debate along with Taiwanese boxer Lin Yu-ting. She has strongly denied speculation about her retirement, accusing her former manager of spreading false claims.
Meanwhile,
the boxing world is mourning the death of former heavyweight star Joe Bugner at
the age of 75. The Hungary-born fighter, who moved to Britain and later
Australia, fought legendary opponents Muhammad Ali and Joe Frazier during a
career spanning more than three decades. The British Boxing Board of Control
confirmed his passing at a care home in Brisbane, extending condolences to his
family.
Bugner, a two-time British and Commonwealth champion, earned 69 wins from 83 bouts, including 41 knockouts. He claimed the European title in 1971 after defeating Henry Cooper and went on to face Ali twice, including a 1975 world championship fight in Malaysia. His long career concluded in 1999 after winning the Australian heavyweight title four years earlier.
