US President Donald Trump was awarded the newly established FIFA Peace Prize at the 2026 World Cup draw event on Friday. The event, known for setting matchups for the quadrennial soccer tournament, took on a unique flair with Trump receiving the accolade.

Trump, who has previously expressed interest in the Nobel Peace Prize, was a strong contender for FIFA's new award. His close relationship with FIFA President Gianni Infantino, who had stated that Trump deserved the Nobel Prize for his efforts in brokering a ceasefire in Gaza, likely influenced the decision.

During the ceremony, Infantino presented Trump with a certificate recognizing his efforts to "promote peace and unity around the world." Accompanied by a gold medal and a trophy depicting hands holding up the world, Infantino told Trump, "This is your prize, this is your peace prize."

In his brief acceptance speech, Trump expressed gratitude to his family, including First Lady Melania Trump, and acknowledged the leaders of the other host nations, Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney and Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum.
