Haryana para-athlete killed after confronting men harassing women at wedding

A 26-year-old national-level bodybuilder and para-athlete from Rohtak, Rohit Dhankhar, died after being brutally attacked in Bhiwani for intervening when a group of men allegedly harassed women at a wedding. Rohit, a resident of Humayunpur village, had travelled with his friend to attend a relative’s ceremony. Known for his achievements in powerlifting-winning national gold medals in 2018-and for training fitness enthusiasts at the Gymkhana Club, Rohit was widely respected in the community.

According to family members, the trouble began late at night when a baraat from Tigadana village arrived, and some men reportedly started misbehaving with women. Rohit confronted them, leading to a brief argument. The situation seemed to have settled, but as Rohit and his friend were returning home, their vehicle stopped at a railway crossing. A group of nearly 20 men allegedly surrounded them and attacked with sticks and rods. While his friend managed to escape and return with help, Rohit was found severely injured and rushed to hospital, where he later passed away despite intensive medical efforts.

Police have begun investigations based on the family’s complaint, and a post-mortem has been completed. Rohit’s relatives have demanded strict action, alleging the attack was a planned act in retaliation for him standing up for women’s safety. They said Rohit lost his life for doing the right thing and urged authorities to ensure justice is served swiftly.
