Putin targets USD 100 billion trade, assures uninterrupted fuel supply to India
New
Delhi: Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Russian President Vladimir Putin
reiterated their united stand against terrorism during bilateral talks in New
Delhi on Friday. Addressing a joint statement, PM Modi said India and Russia
“stand shoulder-to-shoulder” in fighting global terrorism, citing both the
Pahalgam attack and Moscow’s Crocus City Hall assault. He stressed that
terrorism is a direct attack on humanity and called for global unity to
eliminate the threat.
Highlighting
the resilience of India–Russia ties, PM Modi underlined that the friendship
between the two nations has remained steady despite global challenges over the
past eight decades. He noted that the relationship is rooted in mutual respect
and trust, and has successfully withstood geopolitical shifts. The ongoing
Ukraine conflict was also discussed, with President Putin thanking PM Modi for
India’s continued efforts to promote peace.
Trade
and economic cooperation formed a major part of the discussions, with both
sides announcing several agreements spanning shipping, chemicals, health, and
employment sectors. President Putin reiterated Russia’s ambition to raise
bilateral trade to USD 100 billion and assured “uninterrupted shipments” of
fuel to India. He also highlighted the increasing use of national currencies
for bilateral payments, a move expected to draw global attention.
PM
Modi emphasised that energy security remains a vital pillar of the India–Russia
partnership but avoided direct reference to Russian oil amid external pressure.
Instead, he focused on expanding collaboration in civil nuclear energy, clean
energy, and critical minerals. Both leaders expressed confidence that the
strengthened strategic partnership will continue to advance shared priorities
and contribute to global stability.
