Qatar to open state-of-the-art comprehensive cancer centre

Doha, Qatar: A new state-of-the-art comprehensive cancer centre is set to open in the coming years, marking a major advancement in cancer care in the country. The specialised facility will provide integrated treatment services for citizens, residents, and international patients, ensuring a seamless experience for those in need.

Dr. Mohamed Salem Al Hassan, Medical Director and CEO of the National Centre for Cancer Care and Research (NCCCR), confirmed that the new hospital is being developed under the support of Amir H H Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani. “Currently, cancer treatment is fragmented, requiring patients to travel between hospitals. The new centre will consolidate all services, including surgery and non-surgical treatments, under one roof,” he stated. The project has already commenced and is expected to be completed within the next two to three years.

The new cancer hospital aligns with the Qatar Cancer Plan 2023-2026, incorporating advanced treatment modalities and cutting-edge technology to enhance patient care. The NCCCR already employs robotic-assisted surgery, innovative imaging techniques, and personalised, multidisciplinary care. Dr. Salha Bujassoum, Chair of Medical Oncology at Hamad Medical Corporation, highlighted Qatar’s swift cancer care services, stating that over 90% of suspected cancer patients are seen within 48 hours of referral. The centre also adopts precision medicine, tailoring treatments based on individual genetic, biochemical, and lifestyle factors, improving tumour response and minimising side effects for better patient outcomes.

The radiotherapy department at NCCCR is equipped with some of the most advanced global technologies, including TrueBeam, CyberKnife, and the Ethos platform. Dr. Noora Al Hammadi, Chair and Senior Consultant in Radiation Oncology, explained that these systems provide accurate, non-invasive, and adaptive radiotherapy, ensuring personalised and efficient treatment. TrueBeam offers rapid and precise treatment, while CyberKnife provides robotic precision for complex cases such as brain and spinal tumours. The Ethos platform introduces adaptive radiotherapy, making real-time adjustments to treatment plans based on a patient’s daily anatomy. Additionally, NCCCR’s pharmacy employs automated compounding systems to prepare chemotherapy drugs with exceptional accuracy, ensuring the highest standards of safety and efficiency in cancer treatment.
