Doha, Qatar: Climate activist Greta Thunberg has joined a group of volunteers sailing towards Gaza on a humanitarian mission. The boat, named Madleen, left Sicily on Sunday as part of the Freedom Flotilla Coalition's effort to deliver aid to Palestinians amid an ongoing blockade. The vessel is carrying essential supplies such as rice, milk, canned goods, fruit juices, and protein bars.
The
Freedom Flotilla Coalition is a peaceful global movement that aims to challenge
Israel’s blockade on Gaza and provide humanitarian support to the people living
there. The latest mission was launched in response to the worsening aid crisis
in the region, with Gaza currently facing severe shortages of food and medical
supplies.
Greta
Thunberg posted about the mission on Instagram, sharing a photo of herself
waving a Palestinian flag and wearing a keffiyeh. In her message, she
highlighted that the flotilla is not carrying weapons but life-saving aid, and
called the mission an act of solidarity with Palestinians. She also described
the blockade as a form of warfare and urged the world to stand with oppressed
communities.
Meanwhile, the United Nations has condemned the recent deaths of Palestinians trying to access aid in Gaza. UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres said on Tuesday that he was appalled by the reports and emphasized that no one should have to risk their life just to get food. The Madleen boat is expected to reach Gaza by June 7, 2025.
