Jakarta: Indonesia has deployed dry ice and
salt-based cloud seeding to combat hazardous haze from wildfires, as the
country battles blazes that have blanketed parts of Southeast Asia in thick
smog.
The country's weather modification agency has
been conducting cloud-seeding operations to induce rainfall over fire-affected
regions, aiming to extinguish flames and clear the air. Dry ice and salt are
dispersed into clouds to trigger precipitation.
The haze has disrupted flights, closed
schools, and raised health concerns across affected areas, with authorities
urging residents to wear masks and limit outdoor activity. The wildfires, often
started to clear land for agriculture, have been exacerbated by dry conditions.
Indonesia has faced recurring annual haze crises, which also affect neighbouring countries including Malaysia and Singapore, prompting regional calls for stronger action against slash-and-burn practices.
