Panjab University PhD scholar dies of electrocution on campus

A 28-year-old PhD scholar at Panjab University in Chandigarh died after allegedly being electrocuted on the university campus while walking to her department on Tuesday. Jyoti, a research scholar in the Department of Microbiology and a native of Rewari, Haryana, reportedly came into contact with an electric current while using an unpaved pathway due to rainwater flooding.

The incident triggered widespread protests by students, who demanded strict action against those responsible for campus maintenance and electrical safety. Police have registered an FIR and launched an investigation into the tragic incident.

Following discussions with Jyoti's family, Panjab University announced financial assistance of Rs 16 lakh and offered a job to her brother, who holds an ITI qualification in electrical work. Leaders and public representatives have also called for accountability and stronger safety measures to prevent similar tragedies on educational campuses.
