Mumbai: Veteran Bollywood actor Dharmendra, fondly known as the “He-Man” of Indian cinema, passed away on November 24 at his residence in Mumbai at the age of 89. The iconic star died just weeks before his 90th birthday, which he would have celebrated on December 8. His demise came only 12 days after being discharged from Breach Candy Hospital, where he had been admitted in late October following complaints of breathlessness.
Dharmendra,
who began his illustrious career in 1960 with Dil Bhi Tera Hum Bhi Tere,
quickly rose to prominence for portraying relatable, everyday characters.
Throughout the 1960s, he earned critical acclaim for performances in classics
such as Anpadh,
Bandini,
Anupama,
and Aaya
Sawan Jhoom Ke. As his career evolved, he transitioned into leading
roles that cemented his superstar status, with unforgettable performances in
iconic films including Sholay, Dharam Veer,
Chupke
Chupke, Mera Gaon Mera Desh, and Dream
Girl.
The beloved
actor remained active even in his later years. He was last seen on screen in Teri
Baaton Mein Aisa Uljha Jiya, alongside Shahid Kapoor and Kriti
Sanon. His upcoming film Ikkis, featuring
Agastya Nanda and produced by Amitabh Bachchan’s family, is scheduled for
release on December 25. Dharmendra’s passing marks the end of an era in Indian
cinema, leaving fans and the film fraternity grieving the loss of one of
Bollywood’s most enduring legends.
