India began the Khalid Jamil era with a memorable victory, defeating higher-ranked Tajikistan 2-1 in their opening match of the CAFA Nations Cup 2025 on Friday at the Central Hisor Stadium. This was India’s first win on foreign soil in nearly two years, their last coming against Kuwait in November 2023 during the World Cup qualifiers.
The
Blue Tigers struck early through defender Anwar Ali, whose powerful header
crossed the goal line in the fifth minute despite a desperate attempt by the
hosts to clear. Minutes later, India doubled their lead when Sandesh Jhingan
capitalised on a rebound after Rahul Bheke’s header was parried away by
goalkeeper Muhriddin Hasanov. Shahrom Samiev pulled one back for Tajikistan in
the 23rd minute, setting up a tense contest.
Despite
missing stalwart Sunil Chhetri - excluded from the squad - and key Mohun Bagan
Super Giant players, Jamil’s strategy of using long throws and offensive surges
from his centre-backs proved decisive. The defensive trio played a direct role
in both goals, showcasing the coach’s tactical imprint in his very first match
in charge.
Tajikistan pressed hard in the second half, almost equalising when Rustam Soirov was fouled inside the box. But goalkeeper Gurpreet Singh Sandhu, making his first start since November 2024, denied the hosts with a crucial save. The result handed India a confidence-boosting win and a strong start to their CAFA Nations Cup campaign.
