The United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF) has reported that more than 100 children have been killed in the Gaza Strip since the ceasefire that came into effect in early October. UNICEF spokesperson James Elder said this amounts to an average of one child killed every day during a period that was meant to bring relief and safety.
Speaking
during a UN media briefing from Gaza, Elder said that despite a slowdown in
hostilities, attacks have not fully stopped. He noted that life in Gaza remains
extremely difficult, with children continuing to face deadly risks from ongoing
military actions, including airstrikes and drone attacks.
UNICEF stated
that most of the victims were killed in Israeli military operations, while a
small number died due to unexploded remnants of war. The agency warned that the
actual number of child casualties could be higher, as the data only includes
cases with confirmed information. Official figures indicate that since October
7, 2023, the overall death toll in Gaza has surpassed 71,000, with more than
171,000 people injured.
