In a significant development in the suicide case of a woman doctor in Maharashtra's Satara district, Phaltan Police have arrested sub-inspector Gopal Badane, named in the victim's suicide note. The note accused Badane of raping her multiple times over the past five months. Badane surrendered at the Phaltan Rural Police Station and is now facing charges of rape and abetment to suicide, according to Satara SP Tushar Doshi.
Earlier, police also apprehended software engineer Prashant Bankar, accused of mentally harassing the victim and now charged with abetment of suicide. Bankar was produced before a Satara district court and has been remanded to police custody for four days.
The doctor, originally from Beed district and working at a government hospital in Satara, was found hanging in a hotel room in Phaltan on Thursday night. Her suicide note, written on her palm, alleged that Badane raped her multiple times, while Bankar mentally harassed her. Bankar is reportedly the son of the landlord of the house where the doctor lived. The police revealed she had allegedly spoken to him over the phone shortly before her death.
Following the investigation, sub-inspector Badane has been suspended from service.
