New Delhi: The US Embassy in India has issued a stern warning to Indian citizens, stating that those staying illegally in the United States or committing visa fraud will be “held responsible” and face significant criminal penalties.

In a brief but clear statement posted on X (formerly Twitter), the embassy emphasized, “Those who are in the United States illegally or commit visa fraud will be held responsible. If you break US law, you will be punished with significant criminal penalties.”

The warning comes amid an immigration crackdown by the Trump administration in Los Angeles, California. Over the past month, the US Embassy in India has released multiple advisories, signaling a tougher stance on visa misuse and illegal immigration.

Earlier, on June 19, the embassy reminded visa applicants and holders that a US visa is a privilege, not a right, and warned that even after a visa is granted, individuals remain under scrutiny. Visas may be revoked if the holder is found violating US laws.

Additionally, the embassy cautioned that the use of illegal drugs or breaking laws while on a student or visitor visa could result in permanent ineligibility for future visas.

On June 16, the embassy had also stated that the United States “will not tolerate” individuals or officials who enable illegal or mass immigration. In line with this, new visa restrictions were announced, targeting foreign government officials and others involved in such facilitation.

The US government continues to stress that legal travel is welcome, but any form of illegal entry, overstaying, or visa abuse will lead to serious consequences.
