Vice President Jagdeep Dhankhar resigned late Monday night, citing health concerns and the need to prioritise medical care. The resignation, which takes immediate effect, was submitted to President Droupadi Murmu. Sources confirmed that Dhankhar is unlikely to attend Tuesday’s Parliament session, marking a sudden and unexpected end to his tenure. His decision came just hours after presiding over what would be his final session as Chairman of the Rajya Sabha.
In
his resignation letter, Dhankhar expressed heartfelt gratitude to President
Murmu for her “unwavering support” and the “soothing, wonderful working
relationship” they shared. He also thanked Prime Minister Narendra Modi and the
Union Council of Ministers for their “invaluable support.” Reflecting on his
time in office, Dhankhar called it a “period of insight and privilege” and said
it was an honour to witness India’s economic transformation. “Serving in this
transformative era of our nation’s history has been a true honor,” he wrote.
During
his final address in the Rajya Sabha earlier in the day, Dhankhar urged members
to reduce political acrimony and focus on constructive dialogue. Stressing the
importance of civility in parliamentary discourse, he said, “A thriving
democracy cannot sustain constant acrimony. Political tension must be reduced,
as confrontation is not the essence of politics.” He called upon both ruling
and opposition benches to foster mutual respect and avoid personal attacks in
the spirit of a healthy democracy.
Before concluding the session, Dhankhar also touched upon significant constitutional matters. He acknowledged receiving motions from MPs seeking the removal of judges from the Delhi and Allahabad High Courts. He explained that due constitutional procedures would be followed, as per the relevant articles and laws. His remarks showed no indication of the resignation that followed, leaving many in Parliament and the nation surprised by his sudden departure.
