New Delhi: Four Indian students were injured in a knife attack at a university hostel in Ufa, in Russia’s Bashkortostan Republic, the Indian Embassy in Moscow confirmed on Thursday.

The incident reportedly took place at a sports hall inside a foreign students’ hostel linked to a state medical university. Local media said several people were injured, including two police officers who were attacked while trying to arrest the suspect.

The Indian Embassy said it is in close contact with Russian authorities and that officials from the Indian Consulate in Kazan are travelling to Ufa to assist the injured students.

According to preliminary reports, a teenager armed with a knife carried out the attack. One suspect, reportedly a 15-year-old, has been hospitalised in serious condition, while investigations into the incident are ongoing.
