India create history: Defeat New Zealand to win record third T20 World Cup title

Ahmedabad: India national cricket team created history by defeating New Zealand national cricket team by 96 runs in the final of the ICC Men's T20 World Cup 2026, securing a record third T20 World Cup title at the iconic Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad on Sunday. With the victory, India became the first team to win the tournament three times and also the first to successfully defend the T20 World Cup crown, marking a historic moment in world cricket.

Batting first after being put in, India posted a massive 255 for 5 in 20 overs, the highest total ever recorded in a T20 World Cup final. Sanju Samson led the charge with a brilliant 89-run knock, while Abhishek Sharma produced a sensational cameo, smashing the fastest half-century of the tournament in just 18 balls. Ishan Kishan added a quick 54 off 25 balls, and Shivam Dube contributed an explosive 26 from just 8 deliveries, helping India reach the mammoth total.

Chasing 256, New Zealand struggled to keep up with the required run rate and were bowled out for 159 in 19 overs. India’s bowling attack was led by Jasprit Bumrah, who claimed four crucial wickets, while Axar Patel picked up three wickets, sealing a dominant win for the hosts. The emphatic victory completed India’s “Mission Domination,” as they lifted the T20 World Cup trophy on home soil and etched their name firmly in cricket history.
