Former Jammu and Kashmir DGP SP Vaid on Tuesday reaffirmed that India will not extradite ousted Bangladeshi Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, stating that New Delhi’s stance is “very clear.” He accused Bangladesh’s interim government head Muhammad Yunus of playing “cheap politics” by attempting to corner India through the demand for Hasina’s immediate extradition.

Vaid criticised Yunus for endorsing an absentia trial, warning that such actions could set a dangerous precedent. He questioned how Yunus would react if a future Bangladeshi government conducted a similar trial against him without the opportunity to defend himself. Vaid emphasised that Bangladesh must ensure Hasina is given a fair chance to present her case.

The comments come a day after Bangladesh’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs urged India to extradite Hasina and former home minister Asaduzzaman Khan Kamal under an existing treaty. India’s Ministry of External Affairs responded by noting the verdict issued by Bangladesh’s International Crimes Tribunal, which sentenced Hasina to death on charges of “crimes against humanity,” and reiterated that India remains committed to the best interests of the Bangladeshi people while engaging constructively with all stakeholders.
