Kerala teacher who warned against drunk driving killed by drunk driver hours later

Malappuram: A teacher who posted a WhatsApp status yesterday declaring that accidents caused by drunk driving are "murders" tragically lost his life in a road accident just hours later. The victim has been identified as Sharafuddeen (36), a resident of Palemadu, Kuzhippuram, Othukkungal in Malappuram. He was killed when a car driven by an intoxicated driver hit him in Othukkungal.

Sharafuddeen posted his status at 6:52 pm yesterday, in the backdrop of a recent accident in Cheranalloor. His WhatsApp status read: "An average of 15 people die in road accidents in Kerala every day. More than half of these are not just accidents, but murders. Those who know the dangers of drunk driving are the ones killing people. How many people have the death races of private buses and tipper lorries killed? Is there any control? The reason there isn't is that they don't even have to spend a day in jail. They can go home on station bail."

Sharafuddeen was working as a temporary teacher at a private school. The accident occurred while he was travelling on a scooter with his friend Habeeb. Habeeb is currently undergoing treatment for serious injuries. Eyewitnesses stated that the intoxicated car driver crashed into the scooter, throwing them off. Both were rushed to a private hospital in Kottakkal, but Sharafuddeen succumbed to his injuries around midnight.

The car driver, Akbar Ali (36), a resident of Parappur in Malappuram, has been taken into custody by Vengara Police. A medical examination confirmed that the accused was under the influence of alcohol. A charge of culpable homicide has been registered against him.
