Mutaz Barshim to compete in the high jump final on Sunday

Nagoya: Qatar advanced to the men’s handball semifinals at the Aichi-Nagoya 2026 Asian Games with a 31-25 victory over Iran in the quarterfinals on Saturday. Qatar will face South Korea in the semifinals on Sunday.

After trailing 14-13 at halftime, Qatar levelled early in the second half before taking control late in the match. They built a six-goal advantage to seal a convincing victory.

In athletics, Qatar’s Olympic and world champion Mutaz Barshim will compete in Sunday’s high jump final. Abderrahman Samba and Bassem Hemeida will also compete in the men’s 400m hurdles, while Omar Dawoud has reached the 110m hurdles final.

Ibrahim Abbas and Mohamed Waheed advanced to the 1,500m final, while Ahmed Jebrin finished sixth in the shot put and Ammar Ibrahim placed fourth in the 400m final. Qatar’s beach volleyball team Qatar 1, Cherif Younousse and Ahmed Tijan, will face Oman on Sunday.

Qatar’s men’s volleyball team will also begin its Asian Games campaign on Sunday against Hong Kong, China, in Group C. Qatar 2 in beach volleyball, meanwhile, finished second in Group D and advanced to the round of 16.
