Jodhpur: A village panchayat in Rajasthan’s Jalore district has imposed a ban on daughters-in-law and young women using camera-enabled mobile phones across 15 villages, with the restriction coming into effect from January 26. The decision also prohibits women from carrying mobile phones to weddings, social gatherings, public functions or even to neighbours’ homes, allowing only basic keypad phones for use.
The
resolution was adopted during a meeting of the Chaudhary community held in
Gazipur village and chaired by Sujnaram Chaudhary, president of the 14 pattis
(subdivisions). Panch member Himmtaram said the decision was taken following detailed
discussions among panchayat members and community representatives, who
collectively agreed on the restrictions.
According
to the panchayat, school-going girls will be permitted to use mobile phones
strictly for educational purposes and only within their homes. They will not be
allowed to carry phones to social events, weddings or other public gatherings.
Responding to criticism, Sujnaram Chaudhary stated that the measure was
intended to curb excessive phone use by children, which he claimed could
negatively impact their eyesight. He added that some women tend to hand over
their phones to children to keep them occupied while managing household work.
The decision has sparked debate, with critics questioning its impact on women’s rights and access to technology. However, panchayat leaders have defended the move as a community-driven effort aimed at regulating mobile phone usage, maintaining household routines and safeguarding children’s well-being. (PTI)
