The United Nations has expressed deep concern over the rapidly unfolding developments in Venezuela following large-scale US military strikes on Saturday. UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres warned that the escalation sets a dangerous precedent for the region and stressed the need for full respect for international law, including the UN Charter.
UN
spokesperson Stephane Dujarric said the Secretary-General is deeply troubled by
reports that international legal norms were not respected. He called on all
parties in Venezuela to engage in inclusive dialogue while upholding human
rights and the rule of law, amid reports that President Nicolas Maduro was
detained after the strikes on Caracas.
Separately, UN
High Commissioner for Human Rights Volker Türk voiced concern over the US
intervention and urged restraint. The UN human rights office emphasized that
protecting the Venezuelan people must remain the top priority and should guide
any actions taken in the ongoing crisis.
