US
military forces carried out airstrikes in Venezuela early Saturday, triggering
multiple explosions across the capital Caracas, according to reports from
international news agencies. Residents reported hearing at least seven blasts
as aircraft flew low overhead, with smoke rising near key military
installations and power outages reported in surrounding areas.
Venezuelan
authorities said the strikes targeted major military sites, including Fort
Tiuna and the La Carlota air base. Videos shared on social media showed flashes
and loud explosions, prompting residents in several neighbourhoods to rush
outdoors in fear. Some US officials also confirmed to Reuters that American
forces were involved in the operation.
President
Nicolas Maduro condemned the attacks as a “military aggression” by the United
States and declared a national emergency. In an official statement, the
Venezuelan government accused Washington of violating the UN Charter and
attempting to seize the country’s strategic resources, particularly oil and
minerals.
Tensions
between the two nations have escalated in recent months, with US President
Donald Trump repeatedly warning Maduro over alleged drug trafficking and
governance issues. The US has increased sanctions, seized Venezuelan oil
tankers, and carried out operations targeting vessels accused of narcotics
smuggling, further intensifying the long-running conflict between Washington
and Caracas.
