New York: UN
Secretary-General António Guterres has called for a permanent ceasefire in the
Gaza Strip and for large-scale, unimpeded humanitarian aid to reach the
territory. In a statement, he said ongoing hostilities have caused immense
suffering for Palestinians, with civilians living under harsh conditions that
must end without delay.
Guterres noted that the
ceasefire that began in October 2025 eased some of the suffering but has yet to
deliver security, sufficient humanitarian assistance, or a credible path toward
recovery and peace. Citing UN agency data, he said Israeli attacks have killed
more than 74,000 people - including 20,000 children - and injured over 100,000
others, while Gaza's entire population of roughly 2.1 million has been
displaced and vast areas of the territory destroyed.
He called on all parties to
fully implement their obligations and advance to the next phase of the
ceasefire in line with UN Security Council Resolution 2803, saying the time has
come to make the truce permanent, allow aid at scale, and uphold international
law.
Guterres said building a political path toward lasting peace across the region remains essential, reaffirming the UN's continued commitment to that goal.
