The United States has partially lifted sanctions on Iranian oil exports, issuing a 60-day waiver that allows the production, delivery and sale of Iranian oil to the US. The move follows what US officials described as encouraging talks with Iran aimed at securing a broader peace agreement.
US
Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent said discussions between Washington and Tehran
have been productive, with Iran committing to maintain free navigation through
the Strait of Hormuz and allow inspections by the International Atomic Energy
Agency (IAEA). The waiver is part of a memorandum of understanding signed by
both countries on June 17.
The
temporary licence, valid until August 21, covers Iranian crude oil and
petroleum products. Following the announcement, global oil prices fell, with
Brent crude dropping more than 3.5 percent to around $77.7 per barrel.
