Caracas, Venezuela: The death toll from the two powerful
earthquakes that struck Venezuela on Wednesday has risen to 235, while more than 4,300 people have been injured,
authorities confirmed as international rescue efforts intensified across the
country.
The
twin earthquakes, measuring 7.2 and 7.5
magnitude, are among the strongest to hit Venezuela in over a century.
Hundreds of people are still believed to be trapped beneath collapsed buildings
as rescue teams continue search operations around the clock.
Rescue
and humanitarian teams from Brazil,
Canada, Mexico, Colombia, El Salvador, Cuba, the United States, and the United Nations have joined local
emergency responders in the search for survivors and the delivery of emergency
aid.
UN
Emergency Relief Coordinator Tom
Fletcher assured affected families that every effort is being made to
reach those still buried under the rubble. Meanwhile, Venezuela's Health
Minister Carlos Alvarado said
hospitals are overwhelmed with injured patients as authorities continue to
assess the full scale of the disaster.
