Wife’s suicide case takes tragic turn: Bengaluru man found dead in Nagpur hotel, mother survives suicide attempt

Bengaluru/Nagpur: A case linked to the alleged suicide of a newlywed woman in Bengaluru has taken a tragic turn, with the accused husband found dead in a hotel room in Nagpur, nearly 1,000 kilometres away, while his elderly mother survived an attempted suicide.

Suraj Shivanna (35), a resident of BEL Layout in Vidyaranyapura, Bengaluru, was found dead late Friday night in a hotel on Wardha Road in Nagpur. He had been accused of abetting his wife’s suicide following allegations of dowry harassment. Police said Suraj’s 60-year-old mother, Jayanti Shivanna, who was with him at the time, also attempted suicide but was rescued and is currently undergoing treatment. Doctors have confirmed that her condition is stable.

The chain of events began earlier this week in Bengaluru, where Suraj’s wife, Ganavi, whom he had married just one-and-a-half months ago, allegedly attempted suicide at their residence. She later died while undergoing treatment. Following her death, Ganavi’s parents lodged a complaint accusing Suraj and his family of dowry harassment, prompting Bengaluru police to register a case of abetment of suicide.

Soon after the case was registered, Suraj and his mother reportedly left Bengaluru, claiming they feared arrest and alleged threats from Ganavi’s relatives. Accompanied by Suraj’s younger brother, Sanjay, they first travelled to Hyderabad before reaching Nagpur on December 26, where they checked into a hotel.

According to Sonegaon police station Senior Inspector Nitin Magar, hotel staff alerted authorities after noticing something unusual. Suraj was found dead in the room, while his mother was discovered unconscious and rushed to a hospital. “After learning about her son’s death, Jayanti Shivanna attempted suicide but was saved. She is now out of danger,” the officer said.

Police have sent Suraj’s body for post-mortem examination and recorded the statement of his brother. A case of accidental death has been registered in Nagpur for the time being, while coordination is underway with Bengaluru police in connection with the abetment of suicide case registered earlier.

The incident has sparked shock and grief in both families, highlighting the devastating consequences of a marital dispute that unfolded across two states and resulted in multiple tragedies. Investigations are continuing to establish the full sequence of events and responsibilities involved.
