Sanae Takaichi, leader of Japan's ruling Liberal Democratic Party (LDP), made history on Tuesday by winning a crucial vote in the lower house, setting the stage for her inauguration as the country's first female prime minister.

Takaichi secured 237 votes, achieving a majority in the 465-seat chamber and is also expected to receive approval from the upper house and will be sworn in as Japan's 104th prime minister after an audience with the emperor.

Takaichi will succeed Shigeru Ishiba, who stepped down last month following significant election losses.
