Air raid sirens were activated in Bahrain and Kuwait after Iran claimed it had launched attacks targeting 85 US military installations in response to American strikes on its Hormozgan province and the port city of Mahshahr.

The United States said it carried out the strikes after three vessels, including Qatari and Saudi oil tankers, were attacked in the Strait of Hormuz. Washington also revoked a sanctions waiver that had allowed Iran to sell oil under an interim peace agreement signed on June 17.

The escalating exchange has heightened tensions across the Gulf, raising fears of a wider regional conflict and renewed threats to maritime security and global energy supplies.

Meanwhile, the coffin of Iran's slain supreme leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, arrived in the Iraqi city of Najaf, where a funeral procession is being held.
