On Saturday, July 4, Iran commenced the first public funeral ceremony for former Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei at the Imam Khomeini Mosalla prayer grounds in Tehran. The funeral drew thousands of mourners, alongside senior Iranian officials and foreign delegations, all gathering to pay their final respects.
The funeral ceremonies will continue in Tehran through Sunday and will then proceed to Qom on July 7, followed by Baghdad, Najaf, and Karbala on July 8. The final burial will take place at the Imam Reza shrine in Mashhad on July 9.
Ayatollah Khamenei, along with members of his family, tragically lost his life in a joint US-Israeli attack on February 28, which initiated a period of conflict and elevated tensions throughout the Middle East.
