Egypt's coach, Hossam Hassan, expressed outrage after his team was "cheated" out of a spot in the World Cup quarter-finals following Argentina's remarkable comeback from a 2-0 deficit to win 3-2 yesterday.
"I do not want to put it nicely and talk about hard luck. We have been cheated unfairly today, we have suffered injustice," Hassan stated during a press conference.
The Egyptian team initially led the match with a goal from Mostafa Zico, but VAR intervened to disallow the goal due to a foul on Lisandro Martinez earlier in the play. Zico later scored again, putting Egypt on the verge of advancing to the quarter-finals for the first time.
However, Argentina responded when Cristian Romero narrowed the deficit, followed by Lionel Messi, who, having missed a first-half penalty, equalized with his eighth goal of the tournament. The controversy escalated when Egypt claimed they should have been awarded a penalty for a foul by Alexis Mac Allister on Hamdy Fathy in the buildup to Argentina's winning goal, scored by Enzo Fernandez.
"We haven't seen respect or fair play. There has not been respect or fair play. A penalty was ruled out, was not even checked by VAR. A second goal was remarkably disallowed. There has not even been a VAR check when we have all seen the image of the (shirt) being pulled back," said Hassan.
