The Doha Film Institute (DFI) is celebrating a significant achievement with the selection of eight Institute-supported films for the 83rd Venice International Film Festival. This accomplishment highlights DFI's ongoing dedication to supporting independent filmmakers and amplifying unique voices from the Arab world and beyond. The festival, which runs from September 2 to 12 at the Lido di Venezia, will showcase DFI-supported films in four key programs.
Among the selections is "House of the Wind" by Bernard Auguste Kouemo Yanghu, competing in the Orizzonti Competition. The film tells the story of 75-year-old Josette in Yaoundé, whose friendship with her neighbor challenges her perceptions of family.
In the Venice Spotlight segment, "Conversation with the Sea" by Muayad Alayan depicts a Palestinian man's struggle with an Israeli court over his deceased son's social security debt.
Additionally, two films supported by DFI have been chosen for the Venice Gap-Financing Market, which aids filmmakers in securing collaborators and financiers. These films are Jessy Moussallem's "Faux Bijoux" and Ismaël El Iraki's "Wolfmother."
Four DFI-backed projects will also be featured in Final Cut in Venice. These include Sofia Djama's "A Quarter to Thursday," Alaa Eddine Aljem's "Eldorado, The Taste of the South," Bassel Ghandour's "Occupational Hazards," and Youssef Chebbi's "Plague." This diverse selection showcases the global reach and strength of DFI's funding, talent development, and industry programs.
