India has announced its 15-member squad for the ICC Women’s Cricket World Cup 2025, with captain Harmanpreet Kaur set to lead the side and Smriti Mandhana named as her deputy. The tournament begins on September 30, with India opening their campaign against Sri Lanka at home.
The
biggest talking point from the announcement is the omission of star opener
Shafali Verma. Despite her strong performances in the Senior Women’s One-Day
Trophy and India A matches, selectors left her out of the squad, citing
consistency issues. Meanwhile, pacer Renuka Singh Thakur makes her return to
the national team after recovering from a foot injury and will spearhead
India’s bowling attack.
Selectors
have rewarded recent domestic and international performers, including Harleen
Deol and Pratika Rawal, while newcomers Kranti Gaud and Sree Charani earned
call-ups after impressing in the recent England series. Amanjot Kaur, though
part of the World Cup squad, has been rested for the upcoming three-match ODI
series against Australia, which begins on September 14 in Mullanpur and will
serve as preparation for the World Cup.
