India has officially been cleared to participate in the Asia Cup, putting an end to days of uncertainty following the Pahalgam terror attack. The Union Sports Ministry confirmed that while bilateral cricket with Pakistan remains suspended, India has no objection to competing against them in multilateral tournaments like the Asia Cup. The much-awaited India-Pakistan encounter is scheduled for September 14 in Dubai.
Reaffirming
its policy, the Sports Ministry clarified that Indian teams will not travel to
Pakistan for bilateral matches, nor will Pakistani teams be allowed to play in
India. However, Indian athletes are free to participate in international and
multilateral events featuring Pakistan, in line with global sporting practices.
The
clarification came alongside the announcement of India’s 15-member squad for
the tournament, with Suryakumar Yadav named captain. The squad reflects a
balance of seasoned players and new talent, as India looks to defend its
continental title.
The Asia Cup build-up has been tense amid strained India-Pakistan relations following the April 22 terror attack in Pahalgam. Despite political friction, Thursday’s statement from the ministry clears doubts and ensures that cricket fans will witness one of the sport’s biggest rivalries on the Dubai stage.
