Doha:
Indian Media Forum (IMF) Qatar honoured renowned playback singer and Kerala
Sangeetha Nataka Akademi Chairman G. Venugopal during his brief visit to Qatar.
At an interaction with media representatives, Venugopal said the Akademi would
strengthen its activities by giving greater attention to theatre artists and
cultural organisations in the expatriate community.
Responding
to a question about reviving the theatre competition previously organised by
the Akademi for expatriate artists, he said efforts would be made to support
the creative activities of expatriate artists and keep their cultural
associations active. He added that the Akademi would extend its encouragement
to folk art forms alongside theatre. Describing himself as a facilitator rather
than merely a chairman, he said the Cultural Affairs Minister was extending
full support to initiatives aimed at improving the Akademi's activities.
Speaking
about the changing trends in music, Venugopal observed that reality shows had
created opportunities for talented singers from different parts of Kerala. He
said music and culture continued to connect expatriates with their homeland,
adding that the younger generation of expatriates also appreciated the music of
his generation. While new singers continued to emerge, he felt that producing
another legendary singer in the years ahead might be difficult. He said he
cherished all the songs he had sung and was happy with the appreciation they
had received. He also revealed that Talat Mahmood was his favourite singer.
Venugopal
further said that preparations were under way for the International Theatre
Festival of Kerala (ITFOK), organised by the Kerala Sangeetha Nataka Akademi,
scheduled to be held from February 21 to 28. The festival is among the
Akademi's key cultural initiatives, and he said he was currently involved in
its preparations.
The programme was held at Star Restaurant, Kozhikode, with IMF President Omanakuttan Parumala presiding. Members of the forum presented a memento to G. Venugopal as a token of appreciation. IMF General Secretary Shafeeque Araykkal welcomed the gathering, while Treasurer RJ Ratheesh delivered the vote of thanks. IMF Vice President Sadiq Chennadan and Secretary Anwar Paleri led the arrangements.
