A 22-year-old Indian student was assaulted by three teenagers in Ireland while returning home from a bus stop. The attackers, reportedly aged between 16 and 19, surrounded him in an alley, threatened him with a blunt knife, and demanded money. The student sustained minor bruises on his collarbone but was otherwise unharmed.
The
victim described the incident as part of a worrying trend of anti-immigrant
attacks targeting Indians in Ireland. Earlier this month, a six-year-old
Indian-origin girl in Waterford city faced racist abuse from a group of
children. The student expressed frustration that police had downplayed his
assault as a regular attack rather than a racially motivated one.
Prashant
Shukla, chairman of the Ireland India Council, condemned the attacks, stating
they do not reflect Irish culture. He highlighted the role of extremist agendas
and hate propaganda on social media in fueling such incidents. Organised
anti-immigrant protests across the country have also contributed to the rising
hostility.
Shukla emphasized that these attacks threaten social harmony and the safety of immigrant communities. The Council has raised the matter with Ireland’s ministers for Justice and Foreign Affairs, who have pledged support to curb violence and consider legal changes if necessary.
