Prime
Minister Narendra Modi on Saturday held a telephone conversation with Iranian
President Masoud Pezeshkian, during which the Iranian leader proposed the
formation of a regional security framework for West Asia and sought India’s
support, as the current BRICS chair, to help bring an end to ongoing
hostilities.
During
the discussion, Modi expressed deep concern over the escalating tensions in the
region and reiterated India’s consistent position in favour of dialogue and
diplomacy. He also strongly condemned attacks that disrupt global supply chains
and maritime security, according to a statement from the Prime Minister’s
Office.
As
per the Iranian side, President Pezeshkian rejected claims by the United States
that recent military actions were aimed at preventing Iran from acquiring
nuclear weapons. He stressed that the security of West Asia should be ensured
by countries within the region, without external interference.
The leaders also reviewed progress in bilateral
cooperation, including developments related to the strategic Chabahar Port,
which plays a key role in India’s access to Central Asian markets.
The conversation comes amid heightened regional tensions, with several countries expressing concern over developments such as the closure of the Strait of Hormuz and ongoing military activity. Both leaders agreed to remain in contact to further strengthen bilateral ties and support efforts towards regional peace and stability
