Doha: The
Ministry of Transport has announced the launch of the updated version of the
Qatar Bicycle Master Plan - an integrated package of plans, policies, and
regulations that will guide the development of cycling and micromobility,
aiming to improve safety, enhance facilities, and create a sustainable,
connected transportation system.
The
updated QBMP responds to accelerating population and urban growth and keeps
pace with global developments in modern mobility modes. The plan was developed
through collective efforts by government entities, the private sector, and
academia, who assessed more than 1,500 km of existing bike routes and conducted
over 5,000 interview surveys on micromobility devices. The updated plan
includes adding more than 3,800 km of bike routes, constructing over 110 km of
grade-separated crossings, and establishing seven mega amenity hubs to serve
bike and e-scooter users.
It
also includes 17 policies, 18 schemes, 348 supporting measures, a Qatar Bike
Infrastructure Planning and Design Guide, and a comprehensive GIS geodatabase.
MOT's Assistant Undersecretary for Land Transport Affairs Eng. Abdullah Seif Al
Sulaiti said the plan embodies the ministry's commitment to developing an
integrated, safe, and sustainable transportation system that supports the
transition to more efficient and environmentally friendly modes of transport.
The plan aligns with the MOT's Strategy and the Qatar National Development Strategy, contributing to reducing carbon emissions, improving quality of life and public health, supporting sustainable economic development, and enhancing transport network efficiency. Al Sulaiti added that the success of the plan depends on partnership and cooperation between government agencies, the private sector, and academic institutions.
