Doha: Qatar Cancer Society
(QCS) has launched its "It's Time" campaign to mark Breast Cancer
Awareness Month this October, continuing its efforts to raise awareness,
promote early detection and encourage healthier lifestyles that help reduce
breast cancer risk. The community-wide campaign targets all segments of society
across Qatar, urging women to prioritise their health and undergo recommended
screening, while promoting psychological and community support for those living
with the disease. Qatar National Bank (QNB) is sponsoring the initiative.
The campaign includes
outdoor advertising and digital screens across shopping malls, alongside
awareness activities on traditional and digital media. It also features
in-person and online workshops and lectures aimed at community groups, schools
and universities, along with a dedicated workshop for breast cancer survivors
that brings together media professionals and survivors to share messages of hope
and the importance of support throughout the cancer journey.
QCS General Manager Mona
Ashkanani said the campaign was designed to reach people across Qatar, framing
breast cancer awareness as a shared responsibility where clear messaging about
early detection can make a real difference. She said the goal is simple:
encourage every woman to prioritise her health, get screened, and support those
living with and beyond breast cancer.
Citing figures from the Qatar National Cancer Registry at the Ministry of Public Health, Ashkanani noted that 562 new breast cancer cases among women were recorded in Qatar in 2023, with non-Qatari women accounting for 71% of cases and Qatari women for 29%; women aged 45–49 were the most affected age group. She also stressed the need to counter common misconceptions that delay screening, including beliefs that every breast lump is cancerous, that mammograms cause cancer, or that biopsies can spread the disease.
