New Delhi: Congress MP Shashi Tharoor has congratulated Kerala-born Nithya Raman on her election as the mayor of Los Angeles, noting that the two largest cities in the US will now be led by people of Indian origin, referring also to New York Mayor Zohran Mamdani. Raman moved to the US with her family when she was six.

In a post on X, Tharoor described Raman as a daughter of Thiruvananthapuram and expressed confidence in her leadership. He also took a swipe at India's municipal governance system, saying mayors in the country are left with limited powers and budgets due to a British-era administrative structure that prevents them from governing cities effectively.
