Trump warns Iran strikes could resume amid fragile talks

Washington: US President Donald Trump has warned that strikes against Iran could resume if Tehran behaves irresponsibly, even as he confirmed that new proposals from Iran are being reviewed to end the temporarily halted war.

Speaking to reporters in Florida, Trump said that if Iran behaves badly or does anything inappropriate, there is a possibility of resuming attacks. He added that the United States is moving forward well on matters related to Iran, and that a heavily sanctioned Iran is eager to reach a deal.

"They are struggling to even identify who their leader is. Their former leader Ali Khamenei is no longer there," Trump said.

A senior Iranian official previously stated that if the US accepts one of Iran's proposals, it could ease ship traffic through the Strait of Hormuz and lead to the lifting of US sanctions on Iran.

Trump reiterated that he will never allow Iran to possess nuclear weapons. Earlier, he had expressed dissatisfaction with Iran's latest proposal but confirmed that new proposals submitted by Iran through Pakistan are now being reviewed. Meanwhile, Iran's Foreign Minister has responded that Tehran is open to diplomatic talks if the US is willing to change its stance.
