Doha: Failing to treat allergy symptoms at an
early stage can result in more serious health problems, a medical specialist
has cautioned.
Dr Sami Aqel, an allergy and immunology consultant
at Hamad Medical Corporation, said many people ignore recurring symptoms such
as sneezing, nasal congestion and itchy eyes, assuming they are minor issues.
However, without proper care, these conditions can progress into chronic sinus
infections, worsening asthma and, in severe cases, dangerous allergic
reactions.
He noted that allergic rhinitis, dust mite
sensitivity, food allergies and eczema are among the most common conditions
seen in Qatar. Because allergy symptoms often resemble those of a common cold,
patients sometimes delay seeking medical advice.
Dr Aqel explained that allergies usually cause
persistent sneezing and clear nasal discharge without fever, while colds are
often accompanied by body aches, fatigue and elevated temperature.
He advised simple preventive measures at home,
including regular cleaning, washing bedding in hot water, reducing indoor
humidity and using air filtration systems where possible. For persistent cases,
medical treatment such as antihistamines or nasal sprays may be required.
The specialist stressed that food allergies must
be taken seriously, as severe reactions can escalate rapidly and require
emergency care.
