WHO warns of contaminated cough syrups in India following child fatalities

The World Health Organization (WHO) issued a health advisory on Monday, alerting global authorities about three contaminated cough syrups identified in India. The agency urged countries to report any detection of these medicines to the WHO. The affected syrups include specific batches of Coldrif from Sresan Pharmaceutical, Respifresh TR from Rednex Pharmaceuticals, and ReLife from Shape Pharma.

These contaminated products, which contain toxic diethylene glycol at levels nearly 500 times the permissible limit, pose significant risks and can cause severe, potentially life-threatening illnesses. India's Central Drugs Standard Control Organization (CDSCO) reported that the syrups were consumed by children under the age of five in Chhindwara city, Madhya Pradesh, resulting in fatalities.

The CDSCO assured that none of the contaminated medicines have been exported from India, with no evidence of illegal export. The US Food and Drug Administration confirmed on Friday that these toxic cough syrups had not reached the United States.
