Doha: Qatar is stepping up efforts to develop sustainable, inclusive and well-connected residential communities, with infrastructure projects focused on improving housing, mobility and quality of life. This year's World Cities Day, observed on October 31 under the theme "Regenerating the City: Adequate Housing for All," highlights the importance of urban regeneration, access to adequate housing and the creation of inclusive, safe and sustainable cities.
Eng.
Khalid Saif Al Khayareen, Director of Projects Affairs at the Public Works
Authority (Ashghal), said the authority is implementing projects to develop new
residential areas and upgrade existing neighbourhoods. The works include road
networks, stormwater drainage, street lighting, parking facilities, pedestrian
walkways and cycling routes across areas including West Umm Salal, Al Ebb, Al
Thumama, Al Waab, Al Meshaf, Al Maamoura, South-West Muaither, Al Kharaitiyat
and Rawdat Al Hamama.
He
said sustainability remains a key priority in Ashghal's infrastructure
programme, with more than 75 percent of project materials sourced locally. The
authority is also promoting the recycling and reuse of construction materials,
adopting solar-powered lighting and improving rainwater drainage and collection
systems to reduce environmental impact and conserve resources.
Looking
ahead, Ashghal plans to tender more than 30 road and infrastructure projects
over the next five years, covering approximately 33,000 residential plots
allocated to citizens. The authority is also exploring greater use of smart
digital systems and artificial intelligence to improve project planning and
implementation, supporting Qatar's efforts to build resilient, sustainable communities
and enhance public services in line with Qatar National Vision 2030. (QNA)
