Health & Lifestyle
We spend nearly one-third of our lives in bed, believing it to be the safest and most comforting space in our homes. But beneath those soft sheets and cosy pillows lies a thriving ecosystem of bacteria, fungi, dust mites and viruses. Warmth, moisture from sweat, dead skin cells, saliva and food crumbs create an ideal breeding ground for these microscopic guests. Dust mites alone feast on the millions of skin cells we shed daily, and both they and their waste can trigger allergies, asthma and eczema.

Studies have shown that even beds used by healthy people can harbour alarming numbers of microbes. Unwashed pillowcases may contain millions of bacteria per square inch, while pillows themselves often host fungi such as Aspergillus fumigatus. This fungus thrives in damp, warm environments like pillows and can survive for years. For most healthy individuals, exposure is harmless, but for people with asthma, sinus issues, weak immunity, or chronic lung disease, these microbes can worsen symptoms and, in rare cases, cause serious infections.

Regular
cleaning helps, but it doesn’t eliminate all risks. Hospitals wash linen at
very high temperatures because unclean sheets can spread infections. At home,
experts advise frequent washing of bed linen and timely replacement of pillows-especially
for vulnerable individuals. Simple habits like showering before bed, avoiding
food in bed, and keeping pets off sleeping areas can significantly reduce
microbial buildup and help maintain a healthier sleep environment.
How to care
for your bed linen and pillows
1. Wash bed sheets and pillowcases weekly using warm or hot water.
2. Iron sheets after washing to further reduce bacteria.
3. Replace pillows every two years; if you have asthma or allergies,
every 3–6 months is better.
4. Dry pillows completely after washing to prevent fungal
growth.
5. Shower before bed
to reduce sweat, dirt and bacteria transfer.
6. Avoid eating in bed
or wash sheets more frequently if you do.
7. Limit pets on the bed, as they increase bacteria and fungi.
8. Use pillow and mattress protectors and wash them regularly.
A clean bed isn’t just about comfort-it’s about protecting your health, night after night.
