Doha, Qatar: His Highness the Amir Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani met with Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney in Doha on Sunday, marking the first official visit by a sitting Canadian Prime Minister to Qatar. The meeting focused on strengthening bilateral relations and setting clear priorities to expand cooperation in trade, investment, security, and technology, reflecting a shared commitment to mutual prosperity and global stability.
The
talks built on more than five decades of diplomatic relations and recent
high-level engagements, including HH the Amir’s visit to Ottawa in September
2024. During the current visit, both sides signed several Memoranda of
Understanding aimed at deepening structured and long-term cooperation, while
agreeing to elevate bilateral consultations to a Foreign Ministers–level Strategic Dialogue, underscoring the
growing strength of ties between the two countries.
Economic
cooperation featured prominently, with Qatar reaffirming its commitment to
strategic investments in Canada’s nation-building projects, while Canada
pledged to send a delegation of major investors to Qatar. The two sides also
agreed to establish a Joint Economic
Commission, begin negotiations on a Foreign Investment Promotion and Protection Agreement and a Double Taxation Agreement, and expand
cooperation in key sectors including mining, agriculture, ICT, transportation,
and emerging technologies such as artificial intelligence.
The
leaders also highlighted cooperation in defence and security, including a
Letter of Intent on security collaboration for the 2026 FIFA World Cup, building on Qatar’s experience from the 2022
tournament. Cultural ties were also emphasized as 2026 marks the Year of Culture Qatar–Canada, aimed at
strengthening people-to-people connections. Concluding the visit, Prime
Minister Carney thanked HH the Amir for the warm hospitality and extended an
invitation for an official visit to Canada, expressing confidence in a future
of deeper partnership and shared prosperity.
