Air travel is often exciting, but it can also be physically tiring. Long hours in confined seats at high altitudes can leave passengers with stiff backs, swollen legs, and mental fatigue. Addressing this common issue, the Ministry of Ayush introduced a simple yet effective solution during Yoga Mahotsav 2026 - a five-minute in-flight yoga routine. The initiative aims to make wellness accessible to all travellers, turning every seat into a small space for relaxation and movement.

The routine begins with gentle neck rolls to ease tension, followed by shoulder rotations forward and backward to release stiffness. These simple movements help improve flexibility and reduce tightness in the upper body.

Passengers are then advised to sit upright, place one hand on the armrest and the other on the thigh, and gently twist the torso. Repeating this on both sides helps relieve lower back pressure and supports better digestion.

Next, lifting the feet slightly off the floor, rotating the ankles clockwise and anticlockwise, and flexing the toes can help prevent swelling and improve blood circulation in the legs.

With feet placed flat on the floor, bending forward from the hips and reaching towards the ankles for a few breaths helps stretch the spine and relax the shoulders.

The routine concludes with mindful breathing - closing the eyes, inhaling deeply through the nose, holding briefly, and exhaling slowly. Repeating this for a few cycles helps calm the mind and reduce travel-related stress.

The Ministry
of Ayush highlighted that the routine is designed to be simple, discreet, and
effective. It requires no additional space or equipment, making it ideal for
use during flights. Airlines may also promote such practices as part of passenger
wellness initiatives, enhancing comfort and overall travel experience.
