Best clothing to keep you cool during a heatwave

As heatwaves become more frequent due to climate change, experts say the clothes you wear can make a significant difference in staying comfortable and reducing the need for excessive air conditioning. Choosing the right fabric, fit and colour can help your body regulate temperature more effectively.

While white clothing is widely recommended because it reflects sunlight, researchers say the fit of the clothing is even more important than its colour. Loose-fitting garments allow air to circulate around the body, helping sweat evaporate more efficiently. Studies have also shown that loose black robes, traditionally worn by Bedouins in desert regions, can be just as effective because they create airflow between the fabric and the skin.

Fabric choice also plays a key role. Breathable materials such as linen, cotton, lightweight silk and moisture-wicking sports fabrics help release heat and allow sweat to evaporate. In humid weather, moisture-wicking synthetic fabrics often perform better than cotton, which absorbs sweat but dries slowly.

Experts recommend wearing lightweight, textured fabrics such as seersucker or pique that stay slightly away from the skin. In extremely hot conditions, wearing fewer layers-while still protecting the skin from harmful UV rays-is considered one of the most effective ways to stay cool.

Scientists are also developing advanced cooling textiles that can reflect sunlight while allowing body heat to escape. Some experimental fabrics can even adjust their structure as temperatures rise, improving ventilation and helping lower body temperature naturally.
