Washington:
Microsoft co-founder Bill Gates has warned that artificial intelligence (AI)
could trigger two decades of economic and social disruption, transforming jobs
and everyday life even under the most favourable circumstances. Speaking on the
Decoder podcast, Gates said the transition to an AI-driven economy would create
winners and losers before potentially ushering in an era of greater abundance.
Gates
described the 20-year timeframe as an estimate, noting that the pace of change
would depend on technological advances and decisions about AI development and
regulation. He said AI and humanoid robots could eventually perform a wide
range of tasks, from building homes and producing food to carrying out surgical
procedures, significantly changing the role of human workers.
While
acknowledging AI's potential to improve healthcare, agriculture and access to
essential services, Gates expressed concern that governments and societies were
not adequately prepared for the rapid transformation. He called for stronger
government oversight and technical safeguards to address emerging threats,
particularly AI-powered cyberattacks and biological risks.
Gates stressed that managing these challenges should not be left to technology companies alone, urging broader public oversight and collective decision-making. He warned that the transition could become one of the most turbulent periods in human history, emphasising that people must make important choices about how AI is developed and used to shape the future of society.
