Delhi opens first women police station, SHO inspired by daughter’s advice

Delhi on Friday inaugurated its first full-fledged women police station in North Delhi’s Subzi Mandi area, aimed at providing a safer and more supportive environment for women seeking justice. The station will handle cases related to domestic violence, sexual harassment, stalking, and assault.

For Station House Officer (SHO) Lakshmi Singh, the appointment carries special meaning. Before taking charge, her 13-year-old daughter told her, “Come home even if it is only once a week, but run your police station well,” a message that strengthened her commitment to the role.

The station, inaugurated by Lieutenant Governor Taranjit Singh Sandhu, has been designed to be less intimidating than conventional police stations. It includes a dedicated children’s room, counselling facilities, and a women-friendly workspace, with around 60 percent of the staff being women.

Residents and academics have welcomed the initiative, saying it could encourage more women to report crimes without fear. Officials hope the new model will improve women’s access to justice and eventually be expanded across the national capital.
